英文筆記:一字多義 詞義兩極 

英文之中有許多單字都有不只一個的意思，但是其中有一部分非常之有趣，就是居然有一些字具有兩極化的意思

本席之前上 Master. 陳鳴弦 的課

他就有提到 virtual這個字，既可以當 真實的，又可以當 虛擬的

    • almost or very nearly the thing described, so that any slight difference is not important 很接近的；幾乎…的；事實上的；實際上的；實質上的 only before noun
      • The country was sliding into a state of virtual civil war. 這個國家實際上正逐漸進入內戰狀態。
      • The company has a virtual monopoly in this area of trade. 這家公司實質上已經壟斷了這種貿易。
      • He married a virtual stranger. 他娶了一位幾乎素不相識的女子。
      • When her husband had a stroke, she was given virtual control of the business. 丈夫中風之後，她獲得授權幾乎全面掌管業務。
    • made to appear to exist by the use of computer software （通過計算機軟件）模擬的，虛擬的 only before noun

 

 

這幾天，本席在讀 欽定本 King James Version of the Bible (KJV Bible)

本席又發現一個字，那就是 cleave

它既可以表示 劈開，又可以表示 黏得緊緊的

這讓本席又想到 限制核酸內切酶，可以把特定的基因切除，又可以把特定的基因接上

  • Her tongue clove to the roof of her mouth. 她的舌頭緊緊地貼着上腭。
to continue to believe in or be loyal to something 堅信；信守；忠於 V formal
  • to cleave to a belief/idea 堅守信仰╱信念
